PROJECT GOALS, ACHIEVEMENTS, AND BENEFITS

The Better Streets Plan outlines San Francisco’s vision for aesthetic, accessible and ecological streets. Programs involving landscaping, lighting, pedestrian furnishings, and pavement are all ways identified to achieve this goal. To implement this vision, San Francisco will need to prioritize and reorganize streetscape maintenance activities. McGovern McDonald Engineers led the development of operation and maintenance (O&M) life cycle costs for implementing stormwater best management practices on streets for the San Francisco Better Streets Plan. A spreadsheet model identifying staff time, materials, inspection frequency, maintenance frequency, etc. was developed for staff to easily and quickly estimate the site-specific costs of implementing stormwater and other Better Street elements. The Better Streets Life Cycle Model is one of three models that will be used as the basis for the Triple Bottom Line Tool and will be useful in conducting watershed assessments.
